You may have noticed that many WordPress Themes and WordPress plugins need you to create a custom field on posts and pages to get some functionality, for example, to add a custom image. If you are new to WordPress, you may be wondering what is a custom field in WordPress and how you can add it? Here’s details.
Custom fields are basically extra data or meta data that can be added to your posts and pages and then it can be used when the posts and pages are displayed in browser. They are basically a name and a value pair. Following are some examples:

To add a custom field to a post or a page, scroll down while editing the page to find the custom fields box. If you scroll down till end and you don’t see the custom fields box, then you may need to enable custom fields display from screen options.
Now, first add the name of the custom field. If you have been adding a custom field for some time, then it will appear in the drop down list automatically, you can simply select it. If you are adding a new custom field, then click on ‘Enter New link’ to add it manually.
Then add the value for this custom field and click on ‘Add Custom Field’ button. That’s it. The custom field is created successfully and now it can be used by your theme or plugin.
